The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) has welcomed a new report from the Senedd Health and Social Care Committee following its inquiry into supporting people with chronic conditions.

The report makes several recommendations on improving care, including the role of multidisciplinary teams in delivering patient-centred support, promoting self-management, and addressing the needs of those with multiple conditions.

RPS engaged extensively throughout the inquiry, first submitting written evidence before hosting a briefing event at the Senedd. At this event, Members of the Senedd (MSs) were able to discuss first-hand with RPS members specialising in chronic conditions about the profession’s important in this area of care.  For the final stage of the inquiry, RPS Wales Director Elen Jones and expert member Chris Brown provided oral evidence to the Committee at the Senedd.

Commenting on the inquiry, Elen Jones said:

“With the number of people diagnosed with one or more chronic conditions continuing to rise, this is a very timely report. We’re pleased that throughout the report the vital role pharmacists play in supporting these patients in recognised.

“We particularly welcome the recommendation for the Welsh Government to work with NHS Wales to improve public understanding of the different roles within the multidisciplinary team. As pharmacists continue to take on an increasing role in chronic condition management, raising awareness and patient understanding of our contribution will be essential.

“As well as welcoming the report’s recommendations, I’d like to thank RPS Wales members for their invaluable support throughout this inquiry.”
