The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) has published a free, open-access digital resource to support pharmacy teams across Great Britain to build the digital skills and capabilities needed for modern practice.
As the NHS continues to expand digital models of care, pharmacy teams are central to delivering safe, effective and person-centred services across all care settings. The resource explains why digital capability is essential for the profession and signposts individuals, employers and educators to nationally recognised guidance, frameworks, assessment tools, and education and training opportunities.
The resource aligns pharmacy practice with the NHS Health and Care Digital Capabilities Framework, and highlights equivalent frameworks in Scotland and Wales, supporting a consistent, UK-wide approach to developing digital confidence and capability across the pharmacy workforce. It also explores the growing importance of digital leadership in pharmacy and the need to strengthen pharmacy input into digital governance and transformation.
RPS encourages pharmacy teams, employers, educators and professional networks to use the resource to support workforce development and embed digital capability as a core component of professional practice.
Professor Claire Anderson, RPS President, said:
“Digital skills are now fundamental to pharmacy practice. This resource brings together trusted frameworks and guidance in one place, making it easier for pharmacists and pharmacy teams to understand what digital capability means for their role and how they can continue to develop their skills throughout their careers.”
Darren Powell, Chair of the RPS Digital Pharmacy Expert Advisory Group, said:
“Pharmacists and their teams already use digital systems and data every day alongside their clinical roles. This resource reflects that reality, helping individuals and organisations recognise existing digital expertise, identify development needs and take a leading role in the NHS’s digital transformation.”
