
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Amira Guirguis as its new Chief Scientist.
Amira is currently a Professor of Pharmacy, Deputy Pro Vice Chancellor and the MPharm Programme Director at Swansea University. Amira is also the Chair of the RPS Science and Research Committee, which provides strategic leadership, advocacy and expert advice on pharmaceutical science and research to the RPS and external bodies.
She is internationally recognised for her pioneering work in the detection of Novel Psychoactive Substances and was the Principal Investigator for the UK’s first Home Office-licensed pharmacist-led drug checking service. Her research has earned her numerous accolades, including the prestigious JPAG Geoffrey Phillips Award in 2014. Drawing on her scientific expertise, she also provides independent advice to inform national drug policy and supports evidence-based approaches to harm reduction and public health.
In her new role, Professor Guirguis will ensure that scientific and research expertise continues to inform the work of the RPS and the future Royal College of Pharmacy. She will play a key role in raising awareness and understanding of how science and research drive the development and use of medicines, supporting the continued advancement of pharmacy practice.
She succeeds Professor Parastou Donyai in the role.
Professor Guirguis will begin her role as RPS Chief Scientist on a phased basis from 13th October, while continuing her academic position at Swansea University.
